Papyrus from the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum

📜

“The good of a book lies in its being read. A book is made of signs that speak of other signs, which in their turn speak of things. Without an eye to read it, a book contains signs that produce no concepts; therefore it is dumb.” (From The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco)

This reflection by Umberto Eco came to my mind while looking at some photos of the charred Herculaneum papyri, and it perfectly summarizes the work of the scientists at the “Marcello Gigante” International Center for the Study of the Herculaneum Papyri (CISPE). Their extraordinary effort is driven by the mission to restore the soul, reality, and essence to a material, because a book that cannot be read is not a book… Read below the article by Dr. Maria Chiara Robustelli.

And in this image, I—and I am sure you too—immediately feel that same value that made us fall in love with books, drove us to study, and made us archaeologists and scholars. Often, through Nymphè, I try to achieve this exact goal: to create speaking symbols that represent who we are!

Scheda Archeologica
The Herculaneum papyri are ancient papyrus scrolls carbonized during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, originating from the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum. During an excavation campaign sponsored by the House of Bourbon in the mid-18th century, hundreds of blackened and fragile scrolls were discovered; though they initially appeared to be mere pieces of charcoal, these artifacts turned out to be the remains of a valuable collection of Greek and Latin texts that formed the villa’s library.

During the eruption, the papyri were not fully carbonized by the pyroclastic flow, but instead underwent a process of partial combustion. The intense heat of the eruption (300–350°C / 572–590°F), while irreparably damaging the scrolls, prevented their natural decomposition over time, making possible the preservation and survival of these volumina to the present day. The texts recovered from the papyri consist largely of Epicurean philosophical works, among which the extensive writings of Philodemus of Gadara—the most heavily represented author in the Herculaneum collection—stand out. His treatises on ethics, rhetoric, theology, and poetics provide a unique record of otherwise lost works and serve as an indispensable source for the study of ancient Epicureanism. Today, the scrolls are housed at the “Vittorio Emanuele III” National Library of Naples within the “M. Gigante” Herculaneum Papyri Workshop, where scholars and researchers continue working to restore and decipher these priceless witnesses of the past.

Scholars continue their efforts to restore and decipher these precious testaments to history, aided by cutting-edge technologies such as multispectral imaging and micro-computed tomography, which are now enabling researchers to virtually unroll and read the collection’s still-unopened scrolls.

Materiali e Tecnica

The jewelry is crafted in Italian 925 rhodium-plated sterling silver / 18k gold-plated bronze.

The craftsmanship begins with a handmade wax model, transformed into metal using the ancient lost-wax casting technique. New wax patterns created from the prototype’s mold yield new cast pieces, which are then finished and polished by hand. The metalworking concludes with rhodium/gold plating. The pendant weighs 13 grams, plus an additional 2 to 3 grams for the silver chain (rhodium- or rose gold-plated).
