The Charm of Wearable History: The Nymphè Miniature Vases

As an archaeologist, I have always viewed small ancient ceramic vessels not merely as objects, but as guardians of stories, rituals, and everyday beauty. My collection of miniature pendants was born from this passion: faithful reproductions that transform archaeology into jewelry you can carry with you always. Each tiny vase comes to life through a slow, meticulous artisan process: first, it is modeled entirely by hand in wax, respecting historical forms, and then cast in precious metal using the ancient lost-wax casting technique. After casting, I spend hours reworking and hand-finishing every single piece, attending to the smallest detail, nuance, and polish. Choosing one of these pendants means wearing a fragment of the past—a small masterpiece of micro-sculpture born from a love for antiquity and the excellence of handmade craftsmanship.

Materiali e Tecnica

The piece of jewelry is crafted from bronze or plated bronze in yellow gold or rose gold.

The pendants are created using the ancient lost-wax casting technique (cera persa). What does this mean? Using my hands, a few tools, and a continuous-flame candle called an alcohol burner (spiritiera), I shaped the wax models. By observing images of reference artifacts, I aimed to reproduce all the defining details and features of that specific type of object or vessel. Naturally, the initial result is rarely perfect! However, there is a second phase of handcrafting after casting that allows for further refinement.

The wax model is cast into metal, and this raw, imperfect casting can then be reworked. At this stage, the hardness of the metal—combined with tools such as soft and hard files—allows for a much higher level of precision and detailed finishing. Additional components of the piece, such as metal wires, can also be attached through soldering during this phase.

Once the master model is complete, a rubber mold is made, capturing its negative impression. From this rubber mold, new wax models are produced—this time already flawless—which are then cast in the chosen metal alloy. The resulting metal pieces are hand-finished and polished. The process is completed with a gold galvanic bath (electroplating), carried out in a specialized external workshop.
